Things to Consider Before Choosing Invisalign
The clear alternative to braces, invisalign uses a series of custom-molded trays that gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. The discreet, removable treatment eliminates food restrictions and stains and allows you to brush and floss as usual.
Invisalign has become the treatment of choice for many patients because it offers an unobtrusive, comfortable, and effective way to straighten teeth. However, some people may be better candidates for traditional braces. Here are some things to consider before choosing invisalign:
An Initial Consultation
The first step is a consultation with an orthodontist or dentist who has been trained in the Invisalign system. The doctor will take 3D digital scans of your teeth, and then use a computer to create a customized treatment plan that moves each tooth into place.
Once the treatment plan is determined, you’ll receive your first set of trays. They are made from Invisalign’s SmartTrack material, which is a transparent and flexible plastic that helps the aligners grip and apply gentle force to shift teeth. You’ll wear them about 20 to 22 hours a day, and switch to a new set every one to two weeks, as directed by your doctor.
The results you get will depend on the severity of your misalignment and your compliance with wearing your aligners, says Holli Carswell, a general and cosmetic dentist who has treated Invisalign patients in her private practice. Patients who don’t wear their trays as instructed can end up with longer and more costly treatments than they expected.
